A mediator does not “decide.” A mediator’s job is to facilitate a conversation between the conflicting parties and to help them exchange relevant information, understand their interests and needs, and explore potential solutions to the conflict in light of a normative “objective standard” (e.g. our laws, equity and fairness, etc.)
In the Christian context, the exercise goes a step further and the parties are encouraged to examine their heart issues and any logs (sin) in their own eyes and hearts. Matthew 18 dictates a one on one confrontation in the first instance. If that fails, we are advised to gather one or two others from the church. Many churches today do not take an active role in conflict among believers and that is why particularly in the business context, a Christian mediator can provide amazing value to the parties involved.
The ultimate goal of the process is to glorify God. Repenting of sin and being reconciled with others are also important goals.
